The Cyborgs production team continues its soul mining mission with Future R&B Vocals, a neo-soul construction kit that provides a nice parallel to Lofi Cuts (2021, Cyborgs / Soundtrack Loops). Future R&B Vocals is split between drums (120-130 BPM), bass, female vocals, synth, and effects folders. The drums and bass are delivered crisp and relatively dry, which makes them flexible—but the other stuff is a different story! The female vocals resonate in a cavernous space that’s very cleverly crafted to avoid dominating the mix. The synth parts share this space; simple riffs leverage signal processing and reverb in enveloping ambiences that are naturally easy to work with. The effects folder has transient hits, noise and percussion effects, and sustained tones—proper accents for the diffuse abstract soul context being explored here by Cyborgs. Clearly, Linus loves to share, and so here we have C64 8-Bit Adventure, a collection of loops, one shots and more, all generated by a bespoke musical instrument that Linus has dubbed the Commodordion—an ‘accordion’ comprising two C64 computers that bookend a real, functional bellows system constructed of an origami-like assembly of 5.25” paper floppy disc casings! This instrument sets C64 8-Bit Adventure apart—the bellows is actually an electro-mechanical modulator that changes the sound as it’s being played.
